1) GET UP EARLY
If you don't, usually.
A day, a week, whatever floats your boat.
This changes your rhythm which will make you feel, think and plan differently.
What would getting 15 or 30 minutes of YOU time in the morning do for you? Time to read, meditate, have coffee and write in a notebook, pen on paper-style? Before you dive into the thick of a weekday.
If it seems IMPOSSIBLE to respond to an early alarm...just fucking DO IT.
You can, it's easy. You are in charge of yourself, just rise. :)
2) STOP DRINKING ALCOHOL FOR AT LEAST A MONTH
This will truly change your perspective, your body, your available time.
And, oh boy, will you save a nice pile o' money!
Lots more on this topic HERE.
3) LEARN HOW TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT
Guitar, keyboard, flute!
What a beautiful exercise for your mind/body coordination.
If you are able to master an instrument, even at an amateur level, the feeling of outputting music is a lovely high. A secret space for just you to hover in the bubble of your music. A spot to get lost for a tiny bit, to float and grow and feel notes and chords dancing both inside and outside your skin and head.
Grab a cheap used instrument or borrow one from someone who has them gathering dust in a closet. Google tablature or watch YouTube videos for guidance.
Pick a song you love and learn it in its most basic form.
When you hear you, YOU! Churning out its basic melody - ah, what a joy.
4) STUDY A LANGUAGE
Taking a class is obvious and will allow you to interact and practice with other students.
And/or Duolingo is your 15-minute a day, FREE friend.
5) SET A DAILY TIMER ON YOUR SMARTPHONE FOR SOCIAL MEDIA USE
One hour or less is recommended.
Once you are tracking your usage, it will be less tempting to check who has watched your instagram stories every 15 minutes. Twice a day will do. Or, who even cares?!
6) ALWAYS ACKNOWLEDGE WHEN SOMEONE HAS DONE SOMETHING FOR YOU
Holding the door, sending a note or gift, an unasked (or asked) favor.
Gratefulness has exponential effect of radiant, positive humanity. Not mentioning niceties and thoughtfulness makes the good train pass your stop right away (or in due time).
7) TURN OFF AUDIBLE and BANNER NOTIFICATIONS ON YOUR DEVICES
Ding! A text. Ding! An email. Preview! Your brother sent you a funny meme. There are hardly ever any real emergencies.
When you are working on a task, focus on it.
Check and respond to emails and texts in batches during the day. Not constantly the second they roll in!
Eliminating the distraction of distractions (which rarely need immediate response) will improve your productivity LOTS. The checklists will get checked. That thing you've been putting off will be done.
Just leave your phone ringer on. Anything truly urgent will come to you via phone call.
If it comes to that (it rarely does, right?).
Big thanks to Tim Ferris and his book The 4-Hour Workweek for this one.

8) SMILE. BIG. RIGHT NOW.
For no reason.
Let those endorphins loose!
